SANDRA MITCHELL, Ph.D.

Dr. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. from the neuropsychology training program at the University of Florida (APA accredited since 1954). She completed her APA approved predoctoral internship at the Connecticut VA and two-year post-doctoral neuropsychology residency at the New Mexico VA. Her extensive training meets the rigorous Houston Conference guidelines outlined by the American Psychological Association for training neuropsychologists. Although Dr. Mitchell’s first love was brain research, her heart was drawn to working directly with patients facing neurological injury and disease. It is her goal to promote a high-standard of comprehensive neuropsychological services for all Alaskans.

Dr. Mitchell specializes in adult neuropsychology and sees patients ages 16 and older. She uses a therapeutic approach to assessment and feedback that emphasizes education and support to patients and families, in addition to explaining test results and diagnosis. Dr. Mitchell's clinical experience includes evaluation of patients with traumatic brain injury, mild cognitive impairment and dementia, cerebrovascular disease and stroke, ADHD, a wide spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis), pre- and post-neurosurgical evaluations (e.g., brain tumor, seizures, deep brain stimulation), epilepsy, normal cognitive aging, as well as the effects of mood and personality on cognitive function.

Dr. Mitchell moved to Anchorage in 2013 to start a neuropsychology service with a local neurology practice seeing both pediatric and adult patients. She joined her friend and colleague Dr. Erica Coady at Providence Medical Group in 2017.  In 2024, she and Dr. Coady joined the talented team of neuropsychologists at Fuller Diagnostics. On a personal note, after Dr. Mitchell and her husband of 40 years, Dan, moved to Alaska, they were thrilled when their adult daughters also chose to call Alaska home. In her spare time, Dr. Mitchell enjoys spending time with her family, playing with her beloved Rottweiler Bella, cooking, gardening, camping, traveling, and enjoying the beauty of Alaska.
